2013 Kingston Maritime Cup Wrap up

Posted in

The 2013 Kingston Sailing Club Maritime Cup Regatta signaled the start of the HRYRA regatta season June 1 & 2 with sweltering heat and big breezes both days.

Dave Otterbein’s Tripp 37 Breakaway was the boat to beat with four bullets in the big boat Division 1 with another Nyack Boat Club entry, Olson 30 Moonshine finishing second.

Serge Cryvoff’s J34C Noteworthy from Chelsea Yacht Club also had four bullets in the lightly contested Division 2, while the Gusto Girls from Minisceongo won the hotly contested Division 3 – the largest fleet with seven competitors – with KSC’s Terry Baldwin, driving Innovator, in second place just one point behind.

Peacemaker, Glen Baker’s Merit 25 also from the KSC, won the Division 4 Jib & Main class.

Four races – three on Saturday and one on Sunday – were sailed by a fleet of 17 boats. A late, cold spring and the aftermath of Sandy kept the attendance of out-of-town vessels well below previous year’s figures, but those who braved the conditions were treated to a great weekend of racing and some fun on shore as well.

Saturday’s heat was tempered by big breezes, ranging from 12 to 25 knots from the South West. Sunday also offered heavy air in the high teens and low twenties with the majority of the fleet sailing with reefed mains and blades.

Well on shore Saturday KSC offered its famous all-inclusive barbecue free to skippers & crew with Keegan Ales, a local Kingston micro brewery donating the suds. A good time was being had by all.

In addition to trophies, division winners were offered a bottle of Tuthilltown’s Half Moon Orchard Gin, curtsey of the local distillery, at the awards ceremony Sunday .
