On Saturday, July 10, Shattemuc YC hosted the 2011 HRYRA Junior Regatta, which was sailed in 420's. Eight teams participated in the event for a day of good racing and camaraderie, as well as a chance to participate in two other regional events. The day started out with a dying northerly that gave way to a south-southeasterly breeze around 5 kts by noon. We were able to get in four windward-leeward races before the breeze gave out. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Special congratulations go to Morgan Wheeler/Nina Heller (HCYC & SYC), and Ben Goldsmith/Tom Mosler (SYC) for qualifying to represent HRYRA in Southampton, NY at the Area B semi-finals for the US Sailing Junior Championships. They will be competing against the best junior sailors from New York and Connecticut and we wish them well. Congratulations also to Kevin O'Donnell/Ben Yanelli (NBC) Sean D'Attore/Tara Bergstrom (SYC), and Sam Goldsmith/Michael Earle (SYC) who will be joining Morgan, Nina, Ben, and Tom in representing HRYRA at SUNY Maritime's Junior Challenge Regatta. The Junior Challenge will feature some of the top junior sailors from downstate NY and CT in an afternoon of racing, followed by a friendly dinner.
Finally, a HUGE THANK YOU to Peter Feroe for organizing and running this Junior Regatta. It would not have happened without him. Also many thanks to Guy May for providing the race committee boat, and Keith Behnke for providing race committee assistance.
